Why Join Us

Why should you choose MKU for a postgraduate degree?

  1. Affordability:  The University allows students to pay fees in installments thus easing the burden of paying lump sum at the beginning of the semester.  The School of Postgraduate Studies organizes forums between students and financiers of postgraduate education.  This way, students benefit from such meetings as they get loans to fund their studies
  2.  Student focus
  3. Improved completion rates.  We have put measures in place such as automation of the postgraduate procedures under MIS to ensure Schools, supervisors and students are able to track academic progression at the click of a button.
  4. Quality of our graduates.  MKU has embraced the use of technology and emphasized on academic integrity in training our students.  In this regard, the University has subscribed to the use of Turnitin Originality checker software for all work (projects; theses, assignments etc) submitted by our students.  The University has a plagiarism policy in place that ensures only documents meeting the University recommended originality are subjected to examination.  In terms of ICT, the University has implemented postgraduate students presentations via web technologies guidelines which allow postgraduate students outside of Kenya to conduct proposal presentations remotely.  The guidelines however stipulates that the student must be physically present during the Board of Examiners meeting (aka oral examination).  The School of Postgraduate Studies has an office of Editorial office who ensures that proposals, theses and research projects submitted are in form and quality suitable for publication
  5. Quality Programs the University only offers programmes that are approved by accreditation bodies such as CUE and other accrediting bodies that might be specific to relevant Schools, where applicable
  6. Qualified members of staff:  The University has engaged qualified members of staff to train and supervise postgraduate students.  Before supervisors are allocated to a student, they are first vetted by the Board of Postgraduate studies  and then approved by the University Senate
  7. Postgraduate assistantships:  the School of Postgraduate Studies is at an advanced stage developing Graduate Assistantship guidelines.  Once approved by University Senate, they will open opportunities for our postgraduate students to undertake some paid work within the University during their studies.  Students can then use the proceed to pay fee or partly fund their research expenses
  8. Regular Sensitization forums for postgraduate students:  the school regularly organizes forums where students are trained on writing fundable research proposals.  As a result of such forums, 4 PhD candidates research proposals were funded in 2016/2017 financial year by the National Research Fund (NRF).  In 2017/2018 financial year, 16 research proposals were submitted to NRF and we are hopeful that they will be shortlisted for the grants.  In addition to fundable research proposals, forums are organized for writing, data analysis and dissemination of findings skills to empower our students in academic writing.  Similar workshops are organized to sensitize students, postgraduate coordinators and supervisors on postgraduate procedures.  This ensures that students are well equipped to facilitate timely academic progression of their programmes
